Rainbow Mountain does not shut for the rainy season. Tours run from Cusco all year, and January and February are the quietest months on the trail. What changes is the ground under your boots, the cloud over the stripes and the odds of a storm before you are back at the van.
The 2026-27 season comes with an unusual forecast. Peru's El Niño committee (ENFEN) and the U.S. Climate Prediction Center both expect a strong El Niño through the southern summer, and Peru's outlook for the southeastern Andes is less rain than normal. A forecast is not a promise, and last season showed how fast one storm can close a road.
The quick answer
Expect the rainy season from November to April, with January and February the wettest months. For 2026-27, ENFEN's August outlook calls for below-normal rain in the southeastern Andes, tied to a strong El Niño. Plan for mud, cloud and afternoon storms anyway, pick an early start, and keep a spare day in Cusco in case your date is cancelled.
When is the rainy season at Rainbow Mountain?
From November to April. January and February are the wettest months, and April is a shoulder month with fewer showers.
The dry season runs from May to October, with June the driest and July the coldest. Salkantay Trekking's weather guide puts the rains from November through April and says the mountain keeps operating when other routes close. The classic Inca Trail is the obvious example: it shuts every February for maintenance, while Vinicunca stays open.
Rain here is rarely an all-day drizzle. It tends to come in bursts: sun, a hard shower, sun again. Days stay mild for this altitude, but the summit still sits at about 5,000 m, and wet clothes at that height get cold fast.
| Months | What usually happens | Our take |
|---|---|---|
| November to December | Rains build, green returns to the plain | Good odds, mornings often clear |
| January to February | Wettest stretch, mud on the trail | Quietest trail, highest weather risk |
| March | Still wet, showers ease late in the month | Pack for rain |
| April | Shoulder month, occasional showers | One of the best months |
| May to October | Dry season, cold mornings | Busiest, most reliable views |
Will El Niño make the 2026-27 rainy season drier in Cusco?
The official outlooks lean that way. ENFEN expects below-normal rain in the southeastern Andes through the 2027 summer, linked to a strong El Niño.
On 8 October 2026 the U.S. Climate Prediction Center kept its El Niño Advisory in place and called a strong to very strong El Niño likely through January to March 2027. Peru's ENFEN committee, in its official communiqué 15-2026 reported by El Comercio on 28 August, forecast rain below normal in the southeastern Andes for September to November 2026 and again for the summer of 2027.
Read that carefully. Below normal still means a rainy season, with storms, hail and snow on the high ground. Peru's civil defence institute has warned before that a strong El Niño can bring drought to southern regions including Cusco (La República), but no forecast can tell you what the sky will do on your date. We would book the trip as if it were a normal wet season and treat a dry morning as a bonus.

Can Rainbow Mountain close during the rainy season?
Yes, for short spells. Last season a bridge on the Cusipata road collapsed in December 2025, and in February 2026 the regional tourism office considered suspending access after heavy snow.
On 3 December 2025 rain and a swollen river brought down the vehicle bridge at Chillihuani, on the Cusipata side. Andina reported that tours switched to the Pitumarca route the same day, as a provisional detour. In February 2026 the head of Cusco's regional tourism office said technical teams had recorded heavy snow and rain, with the mountain fully covered and some bridges damaged, and recommended a temporary suspension while reports came in (Expreso).
The practical upshot: an operator can cancel or reroute your day at short notice. Book a tour with free cancellation, keep one spare day in Cusco, and do not put Rainbow Mountain on your last day before a flight.
Start later, reach the top once the first groups have left, in a group of 15 at most.
Book thisWill you see the colours in the rainy season?
Often, yes. Low cloud or fresh snow on the ridge can hide them, and that is the real risk.
Wet rock looks darker and more saturated, and the plain around the mountain turns green. The problem is visibility. Cloud can sit on the ridge for an hour and then lift, or not. Snow can dust the top and cover the bands; in February 2026 the regional authorities reported the whole mountain under snow.
If the view matters more than anything, the dry season is the safer bet; our month-by-month guide has the details. If you are in Cusco in the wet months anyway, go. A clear spell over the stripes with an empty trail is worth a few muddy steps.

What time should you hike Rainbow Mountain in the wet season?
Early. Storms in the high Andes tend to build in the afternoon, so a tour that reaches the top in the morning has the better odds.
How to Peru notes that afternoon storms and hail are common in the tropical Andes in the wet months, and advises heading down promptly when clouds build. That matters for later-start tours. The late-start small group reaches the top after the first wave has gone, which is lovely in the dry season. In January or February, ask the operator how late they turn back and what happens if the weather turns.
Early-start tours such as the premium small-group trip and the classic day trip pick up between 3:00 and 4:00 am and are usually down before lunch. The wet season is also the quietest time of year, so the crowd argument for going late is weaker. Our post on early starts and later tours compares the pickup times.

An early start, a group of 15 at most and the entrance fee already in the booking.
Book this Tour detailsWhat should you pack for a rainy-season day at Rainbow Mountain?
A waterproof jacket or poncho, boots with grip, warm layers, gloves and a dry spare layer in your bag.
- A rain shell or poncho. Not every tour hands one out; the quad tour with meals lists the rain poncho as not included.
- Boots with real grip. The trail gets muddy and slippery, and trekking poles help on the way down.
- Layers you can add and shed. A base layer, a fleece and a warm jacket. A shower at 5,000 m chills you faster than you expect.
- Gloves, a hat and sunscreen. The sun is strong between showers.
- A plastic bag for your phone and a dry pair of socks for the drive back.
The full kit list is in what to wear at Rainbow Mountain.
Frequently asked questions
Is Rainbow Mountain open in the rainy season?
Yes. Tours run from November to April, but heavy rain or snow can close the road or the trail for a day or more, as happened in December 2025 and February 2026. Book with free cancellation and keep a spare day.
Is February a bad month for Rainbow Mountain?
It is one of the wettest months, so the odds of mud, cloud and snow are highest. It is also the quietest. If February is your only chance, go on an early-start tour and have a backup day.
Will El Niño mean less rain at Rainbow Mountain in 2026-27?
Peru's ENFEN committee forecast below-normal rain for the southeastern Andes through the summer of 2027. That is a tendency for the season, not a forecast for any single day.
Does it snow at Rainbow Mountain?
It can, in the wet season and on cold dry-season nights. A layer of snow can cover the stripes until it melts.
