The best time for Rainbow Mountain

The dry months bring blue skies over the stripes, and the shoulder months add space on the trail. Pick the season first, then the hour: who reaches the top when changes the day.

There is no seasonal closing date at Rainbow Mountain, but the experience changes a lot by month. The dry season from May to October brings clear mornings and cold nights. The wet months from November to April bring green slopes, mud and a real chance of cloud hiding the colours.

Crowds follow the dry season and the clock. This guide covers both, with a month table and the case for a later start.

The quick answer

The best months are April and May, then September and October: mostly dry, with fewer people than June to August. June to August is the driest and busiest, with the coldest nights and the odd snowfall in July. January and February are the wettest. On any day, the summit is busiest when the early tour vans arrive.

When is the best time to visit Rainbow Mountain?

April, May, September and October. These months are mostly dry, the views are usually clear, and the trail is quieter than in June to August.

May to October is the dry season, and June is the driest month. July is the coldest, with the most risk of snow on the ridge. The shoulder months either side give you most of the dry weather with fewer people. If your dates are fixed in the wet season, go anyway and pick a flexible booking.

What is the weather like at Rainbow Mountain month by month?

Dry and cold from May to September, turning wetter from October, with the heaviest rain in December, January and February.

The figures below are Cusco averages from Wikipedia's climate table (NOAA and Meteo Climat data). The trail is far higher than Cusco, so it is colder, but the rain pattern is the same.

Does it snow at Rainbow Mountain?

Sometimes. The old ice cap melted around 2013, but snow can still fall, mostly in the cold dry months, and can cover one side of the ridge for a morning.

According to Wikipedia, Vinicunca was under ice and snow until around 2013; the melt is what revealed the stripes to the crowds. Today a snowfall is short-lived, but on the day it lands it can hide part of the colour. July is the most likely month. Photos of a dusted ridge are striking; they are just not the classic view.

Snow also makes the descent slippery. See what to wear for boots and gloves.

Can you visit Rainbow Mountain in the rainy season?

Yes. The mountain stays open, but expect mud, cold rain or hail, and a fair chance that cloud hides the stripes for part of the morning.

The wet months have one upside: fewer people, and green grass on the high plain around the mountain. The downside is the gamble on the view. Mornings tend to be clearer than afternoons, which favours the early tours. Wear waterproofs and give yourself a spare day in Cusco so you can move the trip if the forecast is grim.

When is Rainbow Mountain most crowded?

June to August, and most days in the mid-morning when the early tour vans arrive. Cusco festival weeks add more.

Peru's main travel season is the dry winter, and Cusco is at its fullest in June and July. Inti Raymi, the festival of the sun, fills the city around 24 June, and Peru's national holidays on 28 and 29 July bring domestic travellers too. In those weeks expect a queue for photos at the viewpoint.

The daily pattern matters as much. Most tours pick up between 3:00 and 4:00 am and reach the trailhead at about the same time, so the trail fills in one wave. The viewpoint is busiest from mid-morning.

What time of day is best at the summit?

Early morning for the clearest sky, or late morning on a late-start tour for fewer people. Wind and cloud tend to build as the day goes on.

Getting there first means a pickup around 3:00 am and arriving with the crowd that had the same idea. A later tour gets there as the early groups head down. In the dry season that trade is usually worth it; in the rainy season, the later you go, the more likely the afternoon cloud. Our early starts post covers this year's departure times.

Is a late-start Rainbow Mountain tour worth it?

In the dry season, yes. The late-start group reaches the top after the first wave leaves, in a group of 15 at most.

The late-start tour lists an 8 am departure, though several guests mention pickups around 6:30 am; confirm the time when you book. Either way it is a later start than the usual 3:30 am. One guest wrote: "The 6:30 a.m. start time meant that we found the site with very few people." Another: "Late start was nice."

The listing shows the entrance ticket and horses under what is included but also marks them as payable in cash. Ask the provider which it is before the day.
